During the brainstorming activity in the ideation phase for the DrillCon Dashboard, I facilitated a collaborative session with users and stakeholders, including drilling engineers, field operators, and managers, to generate innovative solutions for the identified user challenges. Utilizing techniques like Crazy 8s and Mind Mapping, I guided participants in rapidly sketching out ideas, exploring various ways to enhance data presentation, navigation, and alert systems. This creative and open environment encouraged diverse perspectives, resulting in a broad range of concepts, such as customizable dashboards, real-time visual alerts, and role-specific interfaces. I organized the ideas into themes, which helped identify recurring patterns and prioritize key areas for improvement. This collaborative effort not only sparked new design directions but also ensured that the proposed solutions were closely aligned with the real needs of users and operational goals.
Using the initial project materials and research for the DrillCon Dashboard, I created wireframes to develop the initial concept. I paid careful attention to each step and consistently referred back to our user stories to ensure that I addressed all essential features and met user's needs. Additionally, I regularly shared my progress with stakeholders to gather their feedback.
The style guide underwent minimal changes to maintain design consistency within our mature design system. I concentrated on adding icons that matched those already in use, ensuring a cohesive visual language. Additionally, I created toolface, log charts, and gauges to enhance the dashboard's functionality.
The high-fidelity screens for the Dashboard were created by building upon the initial wireframes and incorporating feedback from stakeholders throughout the design process. I translated the low-fidelity wireframes into polished, visually engaging screens that adhered to the established design system. Color schemes, typography, and iconography were selected to align with the existing style guide, promoting consistency across the dashboard. Throughout the design process, I conducted iterative reviews with stakeholders to gather input and make necessary adjustments, ensuring that the final screens effectively met user needs and expectations while delivering a streamlined and intuitive user experience.
Due to the complexity of the project It was crucial to make the design easy for developers to understand and implement. I went through each screen to review the flow and added annotations to explain interactions clearly, allowing developers to grasp the design logic without needing the prototype. Specifications detailed the measurements for UI elements and spacing. This ensured a seamless transition from design to development, reducing any potential confusion about the overall design.
Font, color, and spacing specifications enabled developers to build the product quickly and accurately, minimizing errors.
Once development was complete and the feature was pushed to the demo, I conducted a visual QA to ensure the developed screens closely matched the final approved high-fidelity mockups. This step was crucial for preventing negative user experiences and protecting the organization’s brand value by maintaining design consistency and quality.
Usability testing for the new DrillCon Dashboard UI focused on evaluating how well the redesigned interface supports users in accessing critical drilling metrics, navigating the platform, and making informed decisions. The new UI emphasizes a clean, responsive layout, intuitive navigation, and real-time data visualization. The testing aimed to determine whether these enhancements improved user experience and efficiency.

The DrillCon Dashboard project provided valuable learnings that helped me in drilling related design projects in the organization. One key insight was the importance of thorough user research, which highlighted specific needs and preferences, guiding the development of features like the customizable Edit menu and template creation functionality. Drilling operations were new to me, and I faced challenges in understanding both the technical and non-technical aspects. However, thanks to the highly talented team who guided me through the intricacies of drilling operations in countless sessions, I gained valuable insights. Collaborating closely with stakeholders throughout the design process emphasized the necessity of iterative feedback, ensuring that the design remained aligned with user expectations. Additionally, the emphasis on creating a developer-friendly design with detailed specifications proved essential in minimizing errors and streamlining the development process. Ultimately, prioritizing user experience while maintaining design consistency reinforced the significance of aligning design goals with the organization’s brand values.
